Founder Interview with Mr. Jimmy Plante, CEO of Folks

Managing HR in growing organizations often involves fragmented systems, compliance challenges, and time-consuming processes.

In this interview, Jimmy Plante, CEO of Folks, shares how his leadership is focused on simplifying HR through a unified, people-first technology platform. He discusses the company’s evolution, product strategy, and the growing role of AI and automation in HR. From scaling across Canada to launching integrated payroll solutions, Jimmy provides practical insights into building a modern HR platform, while offering valuable advice for founders and leaders navigating the SaaS and HR tech landscape.

A warm welcome from SoftwareSuggest, Mr Jimmy Plante. To start, could you share the core motivation behind your decision to lead Folks as CEO? What guiding purpose drives your leadership today?

Thank you for having me. What motivated me to lead Folks as CEO was the opportunity to build a company that genuinely improves the daily work experience of both HR teams and employees. HR professionals play a critical role in shaping organizations, yet they are often underserved by technology that is either too complex or not designed with their reality in mind.

At Folks, our mission has always been to make HR simpler, more human, and more impactful for growing companies. We believe technology should remove friction from HR operations, not create it. When organizations spend less time on administrative complexity, they can focus on what truly matters: building strong cultures, supporting employees, and driving business growth.

That belief continues to guide how we build our product, our company, and our long-term vision.

Since stepping into the CEO role, how has your strategic vision for Folks evolved? What are the key priorities and market trends that are influencing your direction moving forward?

Since stepping into the CEO role, our vision has evolved from being primarily a Quebec-based HR software provider to building a broader HR technology platform supporting SMBs across Canada. Today, over 1,200 Canadian businesses rely on Folks to manage more than 125,000 employee records — from manufacturing and construction to healthcare and non-profit organizations.

A key element of that evolution has been our ambition to become the single source of truth for people data within organizations. Many companies still manage HR information across multiple disconnected systems, spreadsheets, and manual processes. Our goal is to bring everything together into one unified platform that gives leaders and HR teams clear, reliable insights about their workforce.

The launch of Folks Payroll reflects this direction. Canadian businesses need payroll that handles CRA remittances, T4s, RL-1s, ROEs, and multi-province tax calculations natively — not as an afterthought bolted onto a US-designed platform.

At the same time, several market trends are shaping our roadmap, including the growing demand for integrated HR ecosystems, the rise of data-driven HR decision-making, and the emergence of AI-powered tools that can automate administrative work. Our priority is to continue building a platform that simplifies HR operations while helping organizations make better people decisions.

From your perspective, what distinguishes Folks’ HR technology solutions in today’s competitive landscape? How has your leadership further reinforced these unique value propositions?

What distinguishes Folks is our focus on building a practical HR platform designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. Many HR systems are built for large enterprises and end up being too complex or rigid for growing organizations.

Our philosophy is to provide a platform that is both powerful and easy to adopt, where HR teams can manage their entire employee lifecycle in one place—from employee data and performance management to time tracking and payroll. And because we’re Canadian-owned, with all data hosted in Canada and SOC 2 Type 2 certification, our customers don’t have to worry about their employees’ sensitive information falling under the US CLOUD Act.

Another key differentiator is our close collaboration with customers. Their feedback directly shapes our product roadmap, allowing us to develop solutions that address real operational challenges rather than theoretical use cases.

As CEO, I’ve focused on reinforcing this approach by aligning product development, customer experience, and innovation around a single objective: delivering technology that HR teams actually enjoy using and that genuinely simplifies their work.

Could you describe the business model and go-to-market approach for Folks’ suite of HR solutions, including the recent launch of Folks Payroll?

Folks operates on a SaaS subscription model designed specifically for small and mid-sized businesses. Our platform supports key HR processes such as employee management, performance management, time tracking, and now payroll through the launch of Folks Payroll. Our goal is to provide an integrated HR and payroll software platform tailored for growing businesses across Canada.

Our go-to-market strategy combines inbound marketing, partnerships, and direct sales. We invest heavily in educational content and thought leadership to help HR leaders navigate evolving workplace challenges.

Partnerships also play a key role in our strategy. We collaborate with HR consultants, payroll specialists, and professional service firms that help organizations implement HR technology and improve their internal processes. We also integrate with solutions like Payworks, Nethris, Agendrix, Quickbooks, Xero along with major job boards including Indeed, LinkedIn, and Jobillico — so our customers can connect their existing tools rather than replace them.

With the addition of Folks Payroll, we are moving toward a more integrated HR and payroll experience that simplifies operations and reduces the need for multiple disconnected systems.

What have been the most significant technical, operational, or market-driven challenges you’ve faced while scaling Folks’ offerings in the HR tech space?

Scaling an HR technology platform comes with several challenges. From a technical perspective, reliability and compliance are essential, particularly when dealing with sensitive employee and payroll data. The Canadian regulatory landscape adds another layer of complexity — provincial employment standards vary significantly, CPP2 was introduced in 2024, and Quebec’s Law 25 has raised the bar on data privacy. Our platform needs to stay ahead of all of these.

Operationally, one of the biggest challenges is balancing innovation with stability. Our customers rely on the platform every day, so every new feature must maintain a high level of performance and reliability.

From a market standpoint, the HR tech landscape is becoming increasingly competitive and fast-moving. This pushes us to innovate continuously while staying disciplined in our product strategy and maintaining our focus on delivering real value for small and medium-sized businesses.

What major milestones or successes has Folks achieved under your leadership, especially in areas like product innovation, customer acquisition, or market expansion?

Over the past few years, Folks has achieved several important milestones that have strengthened our position in the HR technology space.

One major step was the launch of Folks Payroll, which allows us to offer a more integrated experience by combining HR management and payroll within a single platform.

Another significant milestone was the acquisition of Glow Talents in 2024, which enabled us to expand our capabilities and further strengthen our offering in the HR ecosystem. This move reflects our broader strategy of building a more comprehensive platform to support organizations throughout the employee lifecycle. That same year, we secured $4.5 million in financing from Desjardins Capital and BDC Capital, and obtained our SOC 2 Type 2 certification — a milestone that validates the security and reliability standards our customers expect.

We have also continued to grow our customer base and invest heavily in product innovation, ensuring that the platform evolves in direct response to the needs of the organizations we serve. We now serve over 1,200 organizations across Canada, with a 98% customer support satisfaction rate and documented outcomes like $175,000 in annual savings and one full day saved per week for HR teams.

How do you define and measure success for Folks, particularly in terms of customer satisfaction, product innovation, and overall growth in the HR tech sector?

We define success through three main dimensions.

  • First, customer satisfaction. If our customers are able to simplify their HR operations and gain more time to focus on people and culture, that’s the most meaningful measure of success. Our customers report saving an average of one day per week on administrative tasks and reducing turnover by up to 66% — those are the numbers that matter most to us.
  • Second, product innovation. The HR landscape is evolving quickly, and it is important that our platform continues to adapt by integrating new capabilities and technologies.

Finally, sustainable growth. Building a strong SaaS company requires long-term thinking, responsible growth, and strong relationships with both customers and partners.

How do you approach building and nurturing the organizational culture at Folks? What strategies do you use to foster innovation and collaboration across your teams?

Building a strong culture is a priority for us. At Folks, we want to create an environment where people feel empowered to contribute ideas, take initiative, and collaborate across teams.

We emphasize transparency, ownership, and continuous learning. Innovation often comes from cross-functional collaboration, so we encourage teams from product, engineering, marketing, and customer success to work closely together.

As a company with customers across all provinces, we operate in both English and French every day — and that bilingual DNA shapes how we build our product and support our clients.

Staying close to our customers is also part of our culture. When teams understand the real challenges our clients face, it naturally drives better innovation and better solutions.

Looking ahead, what are your long-term ambitions for Folks in the next 3–5 years, particularly in light of emerging trends such as AI-driven HR tools, automation, and the evolving HR technology landscape?

Over the next three to five years, our ambition is to establish Folks as the go-to HR platform for Canadian SMBs — the default choice for any growing business in Canada that needs HR, payroll, and recruiting in one place.

We see enormous potential in technologies such as AI-driven HR insights, workflow automation, and deeper integrations across the HR ecosystem. These innovations will allow HR teams to reduce administrative work and focus more on strategic initiatives that drive organizational performance.

But as technology evolves, our philosophy remains the same: AI and automation should augment human decision-making, not replace it. HR will always be about people, relationships, and culture. Our role as a technology provider is to give HR leaders the tools and insights they need to make better decisions and create stronger workplaces.

We see the future of HR technology as intelligent platforms that combine automation, insights, and human-centered design.

As someone with extensive experience in leadership and entrepreneurship, what advice would you give to emerging leaders or entrepreneurs looking to build and scale a technology-driven company in the HR tech or SaaS sector today?

My advice would be to stay extremely close to your customers. Technology evolves quickly, but the real differentiator is how well you understand the problems your customers are trying to solve.

Spend time listening to them and observing how they use your product. Those insights will guide better decisions than any trend.

Also, invest early in building a strong team and culture. In technology companies, people are your greatest asset.

Finally, focus on solving one problem exceptionally well before trying to expand into everything. Sustainable growth often comes from clarity of purpose and consistent execution.
