1. A warm welcome from SoftwareSuggest, Mr Girish Rowjee. What is your success mantra? (Something you have followed personally that has helped you in your journey.)
I believe success is about building a business where people thrive, value leads, and culture drives innovation. This mantra emphasizes a holistic approach to business success.
- Focus on Growth: A thriving business starts with its people. When employees are empowered, supported, and motivated, they bring their best selves to work. This involves creating a growth-oriented environment where their well-being is prioritized and contributions are valued. When people thrive, their organization thrives.
- Emphasis on Value: Value creation isn’t just about profit; it’s about providing meaningful products, services, and experiences. Leading with value means understanding what matters most to your customers, ensuring that your offerings solve real problems, and continuously enhancing the value proposition to stay ahead in a competitive market.
- A Matter of Culture: When a business fosters a culture of openness, collaboration, and creativity, it encourages employees to think outside the box and take calculated risks. This culture of innovation keeps a business resilient in the face of change. It’s about creating a work environment where experimentation is encouraged.
2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the early stages of greytHR?
When we started, the HR tech landscape in India was still in its nascent stage, and there was a notable lack of sophisticated, integrated solutions tailored for Indian businesses. We recognized an opportunity to lead the charge in transforming HR and payroll processes in an underserved space.
At that time, many SMEs lacked the knowledge or interest in investing in HR tech. We saw this as a significant challenge but also as an opportunity to demonstrate the value of modern HR solutions.
Therefore, we focused on creating a user-friendly and cost-effective platform that could easily integrate into the existing processes of SMEs. We also helped them understand how it can streamline, simplify, and streamline their operations and drive growth. Additionally, we invested in educating our target market through workshops, seminars, and personalized consultations.
Our early challenges have ultimately helped us build a strong foundation and establish ourselves as a leader in the HR tech space.
3. What steps do you take to ensure the security of sensitive HR data within your platform?
An ISO 27001-certified and SOC 2 Type II-audited company, with a GDPR-ready status, we employ robust security measures to safeguard sensitive payroll data. Our approach includes stringent access controls, encryption both at rest and in transit, comprehensive incident response procedures, regular data backups, and adherence to industry standard policies.
- Access Controls:
- greytHR is a multi-tenancy architecture application.
- We separate each client’s data logically by assigning a separate schema to each client, which is protected by a unique access ID and password.
- Access is granted based on role-based access controls (RBAC)
- Access control lists are reviewed regularly and updated to align with evolving business needs
- Encryption:
- To ensure data integrity, we employ encryption both at rest and in transit.
- We use AWS Key Management Service (KMS) to manage the keys.
- We use AES 256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 encryption in transit.
- Incident Response:
- Our Security incident response procedures are well executed.
- In the event of an incident, as per the GDPR standards, we commit to notifying clients within 48 hours
- Data Backups:
- All the data is hosted and backed up on Amazon Web Service (AWS) / Google Cloud Platform (GCP) cloud servers.
- We employ a comprehensive backup methodology, including master database replication, PITR backup (30-day retention), daily database volume snapshots (6-day retention), and weekly AMI backups (2-week retention).

4. How does greytHR differentiate itself from other HR software in the market?
Between then and now, our mission has remained the same: to simplify critical HR and payroll ops with industry-best tech. There are so many moving parts in an efficient people-ops engine: policies and compliances, delightful employee experience, payroll accuracy, tool management. Running this engine reliantly, and at scale, is the biggest challenge a CHRO or CFO faces.
greytHR exists and thrives by solving a big business problem ‒ the need for one integrated full-suite HRMS to run and scale the entire people operations, from HIRE to RETIRE.
Our biggest differentiator is our product depth ‒ its features and fitment to different industries, its configurability to support custom policies, and ability to support multi-country operations. I think we are unmatched in these areas. Sure, other HR tech players can do payroll, but can they do it with the same speed, accuracy, scale, and ease?
I’m also proud of the scale we’ve achieved ‒ 2.3 million users in 23,000+ companies in 25+ countries. greytHR systems process about 2 million payslips monthly, transacting $1.5 billion+ in salaries every month.
5. How has greytHR evolved since its inception? Can you share some key milestones?
We started with a bulletin board software and expanded into HR and payroll solutions. Founded along with my college friend Sayeed Anjum, in 1994, our business was initially focused on large enterprises.
In 2011, we launched greytHR, India’s first fully integrated cloud-based HR and payroll software. This pivot allowed us to cater specifically to the SMB sector. By 2022, we had over 600 employees who supported 20,000+ clients across 250+ cities in India, the GCC, and beyond. Today, greytHR has become the preferred choice for over 23,000+ brands across 25+ countries.
Our platform was recognized as one of the top SaaS apps in the country and received accolades from The Economic Times Best Brands 2021 and G2’s 2022 Best Software Awards. AsiaOne featured us in the list of Asia’s Greatest Leaders 2021-22.
As of now, our full-suite HRMS platform offers 40+ tools in areas like core HR, payroll, leave & attendance, performance management, statutory compliance, expense claims, employee self-service, and more. The greytHR mobile app enables employees to access information and perform basic HR tasks remotely.
Additionally, the platform has features for paperless onboarding, exit processes & Aadhaar authentication, facial recognition for attendance, and an AI chatbot for employee queries. greytHR also has a Poll feature, Kudos to appreciate colleagues, and the Unite marketplace for third-party applications.
We have also established partnerships with banks like ICICI and HSBC and are part of the Amazon India Digital Suite to reach a broader SMB audience.
Complementing greytHR is a suite of customer-centric services, including a training academy, compliance website, and resource section with webinars, an award-winning podcast series, and local language support to maximize user value.
In 2024, we secured a strategic investment from Apax Digital. This funding will further support the enhancement of our product portfolio and expansion into new customer segments.

User feedback plays a crucial role in shaping the development of our software at greytHR. We consider it an integral part of our product development process and leverage it extensively to ensure that our solutions meet the real-world needs of our clients.
- Guiding Product Enhancements: By listening to our clients’ experiences and suggestions, we prioritize enhancements that address specific pain points and deliver greater value. This approach helps us continuously refine our features to better align with user needs.

- Enhancing User Experience: We use feedback to identify areas where the user interface or user experience can be improved. This focus on usability ensures that our clients use our platform with ease.
- Validating New Features: Before rolling out new features or updates, we take feedback from a select group. This helps us validate the effectiveness of these new additions and allows us to make necessary adjustments if needed.
- Building Strong Client Relationships: We are committed to our clients’ success and foster a collaborative relationship that makes them feel valued. This approach not only improves our software but also strengthens our partnerships and builds trust with our user base.
- Driving Innovation: Last but not least, we engage with our clients to understand their unique challenges that help develop novel solutions. This continual innovation helps us stay ahead in the competitive HR tech market.
9. What motivates you to keep pushing boundaries in the HR tech industry?
My motivation? Well, as a team, we draw inspiration from our mission to improve people-centric practices and performance in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Although we serve large enterprises, we are committed to making HR software accessible and affordable to more smaller businesses.
Players in the SMB sector seek ways to make quick decisions, simplify documentation, minimize costs, and avoid compliance issues. greytHR, along with its complementary suite of services, helps SMBs realize these goals.
The rapid pace of change in the HR tech industry also motivates me to keep innovating. This approach ensures that our solutions are not just relevant today but also future-proofed to meet the needs of tomorrow’s workforce.
10. Can you share a moment of failure or a setback that taught you a valuable lesson in your entrepreneurial journey?
I have learned from numerous sources and people. My entrepreneurial journey itself has taught me numerous lessons. Our business landscape is constantly evolving, and the ability to be flexible allows us to respond effectively to new challenges and opportunities.
Our customers are our greatest source of learning. No business can afford to ignore its customers’ feedback. In fact, when we listen to customers, we learn a lot. They have a lot to tell us, both directly and indirectly. Their feedback provides insights that can drive meaningful improvements and innovation.
Retaining top talent is certainly a big challenge. We have always done our bit to keep our employees motivated. It is important to build and maintain a strong and collaborative team that is motivated and aligned with the organizational goals. Only then can we overcome obstacles and drive the company forward.
Additionally, embracing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a defeat helps in developing resilience and a growth mindset. Lastly, maintaining a clear vision and focusing on long-term goals ensures that we stay on track and make strategic decisions that align with our core objectives.
These lessons have been instrumental in shaping our approach and driving our success.
11. What has been your most significant learning experience as a CEO in the HR software industry?
In an industry where people are the core focus, it’s crucial to balance technological innovation with empathy and a deep understanding of human needs. I am happy to have learned this during my formative years in this industry. This balance ensures that our solutions not only streamline processes but also genuinely enhance the lives of the employees and organizations we serve.
Another key lesson has been the importance of adaptability—constantly evolving our offerings to meet the changing demands of the workforce and staying ahead in a rapidly transforming landscape.
I have learned that every growing organization must foster a culture where feedback flourishes, achievements are celebrated, and every voice finds a platform. We have even launched tools that embed recognition and growth into day-to-day HR operations, turning routine interactions into opportunities for cultural enrichment.
