Net Ref is software that gathers information from network computers. While I understand the need for schools to monitor their computers, that gives them no right to remotely access computers, even when not in school. In the Privacy Policy, in Article 4, it lists information that they monitor. “The information that we collect and use, without limitation, the following kinds of Personal Information: First and Last Name Email Address Login Name, Screen Name or any other identifier that permits the physical or online contacting of a specific individual.” I, a student, did not consent to a private company knowing my name and contact information, as well as being allowed to contact me at any time. Later in the same section it states that they may find the following information: IP Address MAC Address Ports Browser Type and Plug-In Details Operating System Webpages and device Apps visited (including date and time of visit) Device Type (e.g. desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) General location information inferred from IP Addresses and similar information Bandwidth download and upload speeds between individual accounts and Net Ref servers With the students Location and permission to contact them, they are allowed to track down children on the internet. I do not feel this comfortable with the fact that a corporation has my location at all times. Later, it states, “Net Ref may use such information for various business purposes such as administering and providing our Services, providing customer service, fraud prevention, market research, and improving our Services.” I’d like to bring your attention to Market Research. My interpretation of this point is that they can take minor’s information including IP addresses and location and sell it. I have no evidence of this theory. At least in my district, Net Ref was installed on our school computers without student consent. While they may own the computer, they have no right to watch our screens remotely even while we are at home.
