TVPaint is excellent software for hand drawn animation
Animating in TVPaint with a Wacom tablet is the closest I've found to the experience of drawing traditional animation with pencil on paper, but with all the advantages of working in a digital environment. I love using it. This is a feature-rich, professional-level software (used in films such as Cartoon Saloon's Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers and Studio Ghibli's The Red Turtle, to name just a few). Still, it is also suitable for the student or independent animator. It's not inexpensive, and there is no monthly subscription plan, so the initial cost is high (students and teachers should be sure to inquire about EDU discount prices), but TVPaint is less expensive than comparable software such as Toonboom Harmony Premium in the long run. In my experience, customer support for TVPaint is a bit lacking. They should provide a more consistent and faster response to technical issues for the price. (That's the only area that gets a lower rating from me.)

What do you like best about TVPaint Animation?
There is a learning curve, but after you work through the tutorials and get used to it, it is one of the most user-friendly animation software available. What is most impressive to me is how the drawing tools and the versatile Timeline interface make the experience very similar to drawing traditional animation with pencil on paper, but with the advantages of working in a digital environment. The storyboarding/animatic features in TVPaint PRO are also very useful for creating animatics. You can make a film from start to finish all within TVPaint, without having to move your project around to multiple software.
What do you dislike about TVPaint Animation?
Overall, TVPaint is great, but since you asked: the Camera tool is usable but is not as sophisticated as in software like After Effects or Toonboom Harmony. The Camera tool and Multiplane Camera tool in TVPaint need improvement to be on par with AE or Harmony. Some people complain that there is no monthly subscription plan for TVPaint, so the initial startup cost to purchase it is high, but in fact, over the long run, TVPaint PRO is less expensive than comparable software such as Toonboom Harmony Premium. I think the main area that needs improvement is customer support/technical support. You dont have to pay extra for Tech Support, but it can often result in delayed response times from the tech support team, and many users complain of their tech support requests being ignored. For the price of the software, the tech support should be more responsive. Fortunately, TVPaint is very stable, well-established software, and there are not too many technical issues to overcome, but unfortunately, when you do have an issue, you may find that the response time from the Tech Support team at TVPaint is slow. But also on the plus side, the official TVPaint User Community forum is very active, and there are many veteran power users of TVPaint who are on the forum to provide helpful solutions to technical issues. (I would highly recommend joining the TVPaint User Community forum).
What features is TVPaint Animation currently missing?
Needs to add ability to Group layers into Folders. Would appreciate non-destructive application of effects/filters as in After Effects. -- Not a missing feature as such, but many people would appreciate a version of TVPaint that runs on iOS/iPad. TVPaint does work on Android tablets, but not on iPad.
