Teradata can be used for parallel processing of terabytes of data effectively. It has some great features which require minimum DBA intervention. It is most suitable for data warehousing solutions. The smart optimizer and SQL make it easy for most developers to focus on logic and forget about performance issues.

Overall, it is very good software if volumes are in the few millions. For calculating billions, it may not be as effective. The user interface is good, and you don't need to take any special courses to learn it. Joining tables is an easy task.
